Types of Freight Shipping

Freight shipping refers to the movement of goods by road, rail, air or water from a point of origin to the point of consumption. Throughout the shipping industry, we use the word “freight” to describe your goods.

Drayage Florida Inc. offers several different freight shipping methods, with the three most common being full load, LTL and intermodal shipping.

Full truckload involves moving bulk or pallet loads that warrant the full use of an entire semi-trailer, typically over 15,000 pounds.

LTL or Less Than Truckload is for shipments larger than a parcel but not large enough to require the full space of a trailer. These are usually between 150 and 10,000 pounds. To maximize the space, we will generally combine several different loads in one truck, but you will only be charged for the actual space your load uses.

Intermodal refers to shipping that involves two or more different transport methods, typically truck rail, or ship.

Full truckload equipment

The equipment we use to haul full truckloads will vary depending on the goods in question. A few of our commonly used trailers at Drayage Florida Inc. include:

Dry vans – Prevalent in almost all companies, dry van trailers are among the most common freight carriers used to transport dry goods. Dry vans are around 48 or 53 feet long and can handle about 45,000 pounds, or three full loads.

Flatbed – these trailers are used to transport oversized, bulky or oddly shaped freight, like heavy machinery or lumber. Since they are open, flatbeds are not suitable for fragile or weather-sensitive goods.

Temperature controlled – these trailers are used to transport freight that requires a consistent temperature, such as perishable goods. It is important to remember that they do not cool down your goods, but rather, maintain the temperature at which they were loaded onto the trailer.
